The Registered Behavior TechnicianTM (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who practices under the constant and continuous supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. The RBT is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of behavioral analytical services. The RBT does not design intervention or evaluation plans. It is the responsibility of the RBT supervisor to determine what tasks an RBT can perform based on their training, experience and competence. The BCBA that supervises the RBT is responsible for the work performed by the RBT in the cases they are monitoring.

RBTs must have instruction and evaluation in ethics and professional conduct as part of the eligibility requirements for the credential. In addition, each RBT must comply with a subset of the Compliance Code designated as relevant to the practice of behavioral technicians.

When obtaining the RBT credential applicants must be 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, complete 40 hours of training, complete a criminal background check, pass the RBT Competency Assessment and pass the RBT exam.

RBTs must maintain  continuous credential requirements that include receiving ongoing supervision and comply with the BACB ethics requirements relevant to the RBT. RBTs must renew their credential annually, including the approval of the RBT Competency Assessment and complete a renewal application.
